The town

Villamagna, is a small village, 255 metres above sea level. It is located in the Province of Chieti, which is mostly a hilly and mountainous area between the Adriatic sea to the east and the Maiella chain to the north-west. It is extensively cultivated with olive trees and vineyards, and produces celebrated wines and extra-virgin olive oil. This remarkable historic town is set on a hill that overlooks both the beautiful Foro river-valley and the sea and has a population of just 2400 inhabitants.

It is worth paying a visit to the mediaeval bishop's residence and the characteristic 18th-century church which contains sacred relics. In Summer there are religious celebrations, one being the festival of "the miracle of St. Domenico Abate" which commemorates the day when the Saint rescued a child from an attack by a wolf.
The festival of "St. Margeret's miracle", recalls the Saint saving the village from attack by the Turks.
Villamagna has a post office, a bank, 5 restaurants, 4 bars, a mini market and much more and every Saturday an open market is held in the centre of the village.

The beach

The village is only 15 km from Francavilla al mare, a pleasant seaside resort on the Adriatic, it has a fine sandy beach, good hotels, campsites, bars, a yacht club, fish restaurants and every attraction for evening entertainment or night life. Francavilla can be reached by car in about 10 minutes and by public buses in 20 minutes. About 25 minutes drive away is the "Trabocchi" coastline. The "Trabocchi"are old wooden costuctions suspended above the sea for fishing; they are a predominant feature of the southern coastline of Abruzzo, where the small beaches and tiny bays are interspersed with wild cliffs. Here the water is crystal-clear and full of fish, ideal for scuba diving. It is a tranquil spot for those who prefer enjoying nature to the rush of social events and a busy night life.

The mountains

During the winter, only 20 minutes away, you can enjoy the Maiella mountains which offers keen snow-lovers numerous possibilities for downhill, crosscountry, and alpine skiing, and, of course, snowboarding. Winter tourism has radically changed the way of life of some
towns that have made decided to build up an industry specialising in winter sports.
On the side of the Majella facing the coast, where you can ski looking out over the Adriatic, is the Passo Lanciano-Majelletta resort, which is less than an hour by car from Chieti and Pescara and which has 9 skilifts, 10 ski runs, a good skiing school and 5 hotels. There are prepared circuits for cross country skiing, the hotel accommodation is good, as are the numerous guest houses, self-catering flats, the nightclubs and the discos.

From Spring to Autumn it is possible to visit fascinating sites of historical interest and the beautiful National Parks, where there are many walking and trekking routes of varying levels of difficulty.
