The town of Penne, was built completely in bricks on the tops of four hills. On two of these hills the medieval town-centre still rises, between the valleys of the Tavo and Fino rivers, set amid a landscape of green hills and woods. The town has many charming churches that were built in the middle ages. Some of them have subsequently been rebuilt in the Baroque architectural style, while others are original. It has a population of about 12200 inhabitants. 
 

Penne Lake, located to the south-west of Penne, below the Gran Sasso mountain, can be easily explored. The area is a Nature Reserve with a Botanical Garden and an animal shelter where sick and wounded birds (egrets, red herons and ospreys) are cared for and then settle on the reserve. The Nature Reserve, which was established in 1987 thanks to the WWF, has an educational centre and includes the whole lake, its shore and a part of the Tavo river and is visited by more than 160 species of birds. Dense vegetation surrounds the lake, which is vital for the protection of the otter and the wild duck. Spring and autumn are among the best times of the year to visit.

The beach - Penne is only 30 minutes drive from Pineto beach which is popular with regular visitors to Abruzzo with its beautiful pine-wood that runs along the beach and separates the sea from the village. On the coast between Pineto and Silvi Marina stands the picturesque, 15th-century fortified lookout tower of Torre Cerrano. The coast line in this area is a protected area to preserve the natural sand dunes and the tranquil pine woods which are home to some interesing birds, mammals and amphibians.

The mountains and Campo Imperatore ski resort on the Gran Sasso mountain chain are easily accessible in about 40 minutes by car. Farindola, only 15 minutes drive, is a mountain village which is ideal for excursions on foot and on horseback, mountain-biking, educational guided tours, trekking, nature photography and seeing wildlife, both in proteced areas and in the wilderness.
